How to Install VST Plugins in Pro Tools

RTAS/TDM: Legacy formats supported only in Pro Tools 10 and earlier.

Pro Tools 12 and above require plug-ins to be AAX format and 64-bit.

You can test our AU/VST/VST3 demo versions use a third‑party “plugin host” or “wrapper” such as Blue Cat Audio Patchwork or DDMF Metaplugin. These run as AAX plugins inside Pro Tools and allow you to load AU/VST/VST3 formats.

Install VST Plugins in Pro Tools

A commonly cited problem with Pro Tools, an audio creation and production software, is that it will not work with third-party developers. With thousands of Virtual Studio Technologies plug-ins (or VSTs) to choose from, many Pro Tools users want to expand their workstations by adding them. However, Pro Tools will not recognize VSTs as usable content. Thanks to FXpansion, there are ways to add VST plug-ins into Pro Tools.

      Plug-in Compatibility

What plug-in formats are compatible with Pro Tools?

Pro Tools primarily uses the AAX (Avid Audio Extension) plug-in format for real-time processing and AudioSuite for non-real-time rendering. Modern Pro Tools (11 and later) requires 64-bit AAX plugins, which are available in Native (for all systems) and DSP (for HDX hardware) versions.

FAQ – Using Our Plugins in Pro Tools

Q1: Why don’t your plugins show up in Pro Tools? Our plugins are available in AU, VST, and VST3 formats. Pro Tools only supports AAX plugins natively, so AU/VST/VST3 formats will not appear directly in Pro Tools.

Q2: Can I still use your plugins in Pro Tools? Yes.

Q3: Is installation more complicated than other plugins? It may feel more complex because of the extra step: you install our plugin normally, then load it inside Patchwork or Metaplugin, which you insert as an AAX plugin in Pro Tools. In other DAWs (Logic, Cubase, Ableton, etc.), installation is straightforward since they support AU/VST/VST3 directly.

Q4: Do you provide AAX versions of your plugins? Currently, we do not provide AAX versions. If this changes in the future, we will announce it on our website.

Q5: What is your refund policy? As our products are digital downloads, they cannot be returned once downloaded. Refunds are therefore not available, as stated on our website. Test our AU/VST/VST3 demo versions before purchasing. We are always here to help you get the most out of your purchase.
